G. Thompson, that a finite simple nonabelian group $G$ has a conjugacy class $Ψ$ of covering number 2; i.e $G = Ψ^2$. We show that the commutator subgroup $Ω(V,Q)$ of the orthogonal group $O(V,Q)$ of a hyperbolic quadratic vector space $(V, Q)$ over a field $K$ has a conjugacy class $Ψ$ such that $Ω(V,Q) = Ψ^2 \\cup -Ψ^2$.","category":"research","comments":0,"disputed":false,"division":"math","mentions":0,"discussed":0,"published":"2026-08-17","reactions":{}}
