We prove that the canonical bundle is ample in dimension $n\\geq4$ and show that this dimension bound is sharp. We construct infinitely many pairwise noncommensurable noncompact Picard modular threefolds whose smooth projective toroidal compactifications have non-ample canonical bundle.
