This map essentially sends a matrix to its characteristic polynomial. Our main result is that smooth compactly supported measures on $\\mathfrak{u}$ are pushed by the Chevalley map to measures on $\\mathfrak{c}$ with density functions in $L^q(\\mathfrak{c})$ for all $q < \\infty$. We also provide similar results for the Chevalley map attached to the unitary group.
