We show that the inclusion-exclusion expansion of the elementary weight of a rooted tree over its rooted subforests can be interpreted as the antipode of Schmitt's Hopf algebra of graphs. This interpretation recovers known identities for operator splitting and partitioned Runge-Kutta methods from general properties of the antipode.
