Optimal Synthesis on the Special Linear Group
We study the exponential map on the group of real two-by-two matrices with determinant one, endowed with a left-invariant Riemannian metric. Using the Euler-Poincaré equation and its linearization, we determine the conjugate and Maxwell times and identify a domain on which the exponential map is a global diffeomorphism onto the complement of the Maxwell stratum. This provides an alternative proof that the first Maxwell time coincides with the cut time.
